Spartan Customer Support

So, the question I’m getting asked now is “What’s the next challenge?”

Rope climb

I must admit it’s a better conversation starter than

“Hey, how’s that programming thing going?”

“Gosh I wrote a killer query this week that cut the response time in half from .000076 milliseconds down to .000034 milliseconds, man, what a rush.”

SILENCE

“How bout them Noles!”

Anyway, I started looking at other OCR (Obstacle Course Races).

One of the major players of OCR is Spartan Race.

I haven’t run a Spartan Race.

It is worldwide, tied in with Reebok and garnering TV deals. They offer a variety of flavors, Sprint, Super, Beast, Death Race,  *Sale at Macy’s

Spartan also has a points system and obstacles are more crossfit related than Savage Race or Tough Mudder. Climb ropes, flip tires, haul buckets of rocks,, the kind of things we did as kids on construction sites after hours.

I went to the website looking to find out if there are age divisions and how other 60 year old guys might be doing in the competition. If you drill deep you can find the results for each race. They display the top 100 finishers and age. I scanned a number of the races and could not find a 60+ age in the top 100 results of any race.

I thought, if no 60 year old has made it, then maybe I’ll give it a go, otherwise why spend $100+ to do another race.

There have been lots and lots of races so I thought I’d send in an email to determine officially if this might be a possible record to shoot for.

After several clicks to verify I’m not a spambot and have read FAQs, I reached the email submission form and wrote the following:

EMAIL

Are there age divisions. Has any 60 year old made it into top 100 in your race results?
Thanks

Within 24 hours I received the following reply

Randy Messer,

A customer support staff member has replied to your support request, #XXXXXXX with the following response:

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the email. Yes, there are age divisions. Unfortunately I am unable to tell you whether anybody 60 or over has ever cracked in the top 100 in any race, I can only say for a particular race.

We hope this response has sufficiently answered your questions. If not, please do not send another email. Instead, reply to this email or login to your account for a complete archive of all your support requests and responses.

This is my reply to Jake

Jake,

Come on buddy, be a SPARTAN!, go the distance, find a spreadsheet of all race results (OK, limit it to Super Spartan). Hunt it down, spear it with Excel and sort by age. Be creative, there’s some IT guy who will take it as a personal challenge to get you that information if you tell him it can’t be done. (That drives IT guys crazy.)

I can beat myself up for a Benjamin at any race but if no 60 year old has cracked top 100, then that makes it interesting and maybe worth a story or two.

Also what are the age divisions and do you have awards for 1,2,3 in each division?

Jake is an awesome name, live up to it, be AWESOME!

[DAY LATER]

Hi Randy,

Unfortunately I simply to do not have access to that information. However, I do know that a 60 year old female won the Women’s Elite Heat in Montana earlier this year, her time was 21st overall.

Athlinks posts all of our results and can probably do a simple search to tell you weather a 60+ year old male has ever been in the top 100. They can be reached at:

athlinks.com/contact.aspx

Sorry I cannot be of more help but we are still a young company and not every piece of information is at my finger tips. Hopefully some day soon!

We hope this response has sufficiently answered your questions. If not, please do not send another email. Instead, reply to this email or login to your account for a complete archive of all your support requests and responses.

[AND THEN A LITTLE LATER]

Hi Randy,

Figured out a easier way to find the info you are looking for. Instead of looking for individual race results, look at total 2013 points. Go to:

http://www.spartanrace.com/worldrankings/spartan-race-point-standings-2013.html#

You can search for each individual age group and see which races those racers collected points in as well as their finish time and overall rank.

Turns out I did have the info at my finger tips, I just had to think outside the box a little bit to get to it.

We hope this response has sufficiently answered your questions. If not, please do not send another email. Instead, reply to this email or login to your account for a complete archive of all your support requests and responses.

[REPLY TO JAKE]

Jake,

Nice job, way to put in some extra Spartan effort. I could tell that the first response was a CYA reply, but then you were like Maverick in Top Gun when the commander kept shouting “Engage Maverick”,,, and there was no Maverick,,, but then BOOM,, there he is, guns a blazing.

Thanks for the great customer service.

Enjoy the weekend.

Randy

I work for an online tech company and we have a lot of customer support requests. It’s always interesting to see how other companies handle customer requests, especially those that are on the fringe.

Wonder if its the same Jake from State Farm?
